![]() The prostitutes that inhabited the Whitechapel District could stay at various common lodging houses known as "Doss Houses" for one or two shillings a night and were often told to leave if they were unable to provide the money. The London Metropolitan Police estimated that there were 62 brothels and 1,200 active prostitutes at any given time, every one of them a potential target of a serial killer. Whitechapel itself was known as a Red Light District of the city meaning that it was a haven for prostitutes, drug addicts, and gangsters. "Jack" as he called himself, was active in the Whitechapel district of London, England during the late 1800s.
